Caves in Lesvos

    CAVE IN THERMI LESVOS
    Cave of Ayios Ionannis “Kataphygis” at the area of Thermi at Lesvos on the slopes of Mt “Palamas”. It is quite deep and inside there is stalactites’ decoration. Also at the area of Thermi we find the cave of Ayios Thymianos at the eastern side of the torrent “Teneyia” with depth 10m. and width 3m. and the cave of Ayios Philippos on the rocky slope of Mt “Sarae”. We have to notice here that the above mentioned caves have been used as ascetic accommodation by priest-monks.

    CAVE IN GERA LESVOS
    Cave of Ayios Ioannis ( Saint John ) or “Phoussa” : It is at the area of Mychou ( Geras Bay ) at Lesvos island , with length 95m. and two corridors with marble walls. Inside tombs of the 5th century were found – according to the local Archaeological Service. There isn’t stalactites’ decoration but we can admire wonderful formations on the vault.

    CAVE MAYARAS LESVOS
    It is found at the area of the village Alyphanta (Municipality of Mytilene ) and is a cave with the biggest length in Lesvos ( about 120m. ). At its internal finds of the Roman and Byzantine era were found. It hasn’t got stalactites’ decoration but it has considerable forks.

    Cave at the site Ylastra or Kastelli in the Municipality of Ayiassos in Lesvos.
    Cave “Liakas” at the area of the village Assomatos.

    CAVES IN PLOMARI LESVOS
    Cave of Ayios Issidoros in the Municipality of Plomari in Lesvos.
    Cave “Anydros” in the Municipality of Plomari.
